Dr. Edward Cadman of Wenatchee, Washington, USA, was a Senior Partner and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Wenatchee Valley Clinic.
Born in Wenatchee, he graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, and received his medical degree from Columbia University in New York City.
He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as the regional representative of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He was also President of local District School Board and the Music Theatre as well as a Director of the Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce.
He also served as Director General of the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival.
Edward had been a Rotarian since 1955 and was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Wenatchee.
He passed away on 17th April, 2002.
"When I was president of my club for the second time in 1985-86, the president of RI was Edward Cadman and our governor, Ernesto Paterniani from the Rotary Club of Piracicaba-Vila Rezende.
The motto of the year was, direct and incisive, "You are the key."
Once, in the second "President's Message" for the month of August, Cadman spoke of the rainbow.
Some time later, he made a trip to Foz do Iguacu, Parana, and delighted with the waterfalls, gave the following statement:- "A few days before our arrival there was storm in the area and, perhaps therefore, the waters had a tone of mud.
As this turbid water crashed over the falls below us, it spread a mist around us cloudy and unattractive.
But continuing the walk for just over half a kilometer, I encountered a very different picture.
The same spray was persisting but seemed to be falling in the opposite direction, giving the impression that it struggled to return to heaven from which it might have come.
The difference, however, was that this time the light of a bright sun, shone through the myriads of droplets in the air and refracted varied hues and, in a short time, opened up in front of us, a beautiful rainbow.
The sunshine had done something quite ordinary but which created the most pure beauty.
It did something special and unique, turning the waters of the river into an exuberant and multicoloured spectacle.
We Rotarians can be the same; we have the opportunity to extend ourselves and, through our clubs, offer services to millions of people in this world. Rotarians can transform the ordinary into something beautiful, the common into something special.
Rotarians may be the ray of sunshine — and you can create a rainbow. "
Thirteen years later, President James Lacy adopted the rainbow as the background of our logo which is based on our greatest symbol of Rotary, the gear and the horizon, as a way to reach it, the slogan "Make His real dream of Rotary."
